Lunch is providedLAUREN BULLOCK is a queer Vietnamese and Black writer, performer, and teaching artist. Her work has appeared on AFROPUNK.com, Button Poetry, The Smithsonian Asian Pacific American Center, and most recently Imagoes: A Queer Anthology (Love, Pain & Poetry Publishing). Currently she serves as a staff writer for pop culture website Black Nerd Problems as well as poetry editor for literary magazine FreezeRay Poetry. Join InsideOut for a series of creative writing workshops inspired by the DIA's special exhibition Detroit Collects. Led by InsideOut's acclaimed Writers-in-Residence, these workshops will utilize selected paintings and photos to explore the ways visual art can connect to and deepen our conversations and our writing.Participants will have opportunities to explore examples of ekphrastic poetry and write their own poems as they "enter into" these compelling works of art. Register today for spoken word/poetry and photography workshops for high school students!Sessions will help students prepare poetry and photos for the 33rd Annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Holiday Celebration of Macomb County Contest. Each contest will have cash and other prizes. Lunch is provided.WITH GUEST ARTIST RAYCH JACKSON: Rachel “Raych” Jackson is a writer, educator and performer. While teaching third and fourth grade in Chicago Public Schools, Jackson competed on numerous national poetry teams and individual competitions. Her poems have gained over 1.5 million views on YouTube. She is the 2017 NUPIC Champion and a 2017 Pink Door fellow. Jackson recently voiced 'DJ Raych' in the Jackbox game, Mad Verse City. Her latest play, “Emotions & Bots”, premiered at the Woerdz Festival in Lucerne, Switzerland. Jackson wrote a room dedicated to her city for 29Rooms' first installment in Chicago, through Refinery 29. She co-created and co-hosts Big Kid Slam, a monthly poetry show in Chicago. Jackson’s work has been published by many— including Poetry Magazine, The Rumpus, The Shallow Ends, and Washington Square Review. Her debut collection EVEN THE SAINTS AUDITION is forthcoming through Button Poetry.
