There are few moments in a nonprofit organization’s life that are truly transformative. InsideOut Literary Arts is about to experience one.

InsideOut is honored to receive a gift from MacKenzie Scott’s Yield Giving foundation.

As you may know, over the last few years, MacKenzie Scott has made gifts of $1 MILLION to nonprofits all over the country.

InsideOut was selected for a $2 million dollar gift (yes, you read that right!) as one of the highest-scoring organizations in the applicant pool. We are incredibly moved by this tremendous vote of confidence in our programming and in our team.

While we will be taking a moment to celebrate, breathe and plan for strategic growth, we can tell you right now that this gift will allow InsideOut to:

  • Further ignite student creativity, nurture emerging voices, and produce the next generation of thinkers and leaders through helping young people find their voices.
  • Continue to bring our mission to the broader community through thoughtful, collaborative community programming that engages diverse audiences in the ways that the written and spoken word can connect to and enrich their lives.

We hope you’ll take a moment to celebrate with us.

From humble beginnings, it took all of you to help get us here. We were founded by Detroit Public Schools teacher Dr. Terry Blackhawk in 1995 and grew from a handful of classrooms to serving thousands of students annually. We weathered the pandemic, grew stronger as a team and organization, and adapted to what students need from us right now. Your support and encouragement have sustained us for nearly 30 years, and we are ready to accept this transformative gift to meet our collective moment.

Buckle Up! The next chapter is here. Good things are coming.

With my deepest gratitude,
